“In times of multiple global crises, science communication is no longer optional – it is a societal responsibility.”
Amid global crises, the spread of fake news, and growing societal polarization, science is facing increasing challenges to its legitimacy and public trust. How can scientific knowledge maintain its authority and relevance in democratic societies under such conditions?
In her contribution, Dr. Meike Haken examines how science communication is moving beyond traditional academic channels and increasingly entering the public sphere. Particular attention is given to scientists themselves, who are becoming active communicators and so-called ScienceFluencers, sharing research findings directly with broader audiences through social media and other digital platforms.
From a sociological perspective of knowledge, the talk examines how these developments are transforming the culture of scientific communication and redefining the role of scientists in society. Reflecting on these shifts is especially urgent in the context of today’s interconnected and crisis-prone global landscape.
